How to Choose the Best Summer Programme for your Child

As the heat is rising and the long days of summer are approaching, the thought of a summer camp for your child looks ever more appealing. But how do you go about finding the right camp? Do you want entertainment, education or a combination of both? To help you choose the best programme for your child whether you are in the UAE, in Europe or the UK, we have put together a list of questions to think about and some potential solutions.

What do you need to think about when choosing a summer programme?

1) Do you want your children to be super busy and physically active? Then a sports camp such as the Anglo-Continental Football Camp or International Summer Camp Crans Montana may be what you need.

2) Is this an ideal opportunity to improve some academic skills? In which case it is worth exploring the Oxford Study Course for Pre-IB or Chelsea Independent College for some subject specific help.

3) The summer is a perfect time to pick up or improve on a language. Bell run fabulous English Language programmes in the heart of England with great outings to local attractions or if you are looking for French or German then Chantemerle is ideal with a combined activities language programme or for Arabic and other activities you might want to look at Kings Academy, Jordan.

4) What if your child has more of an interest in coding, marketing or aeronautical Engineering? Summer courses for all of these exist at FunTech Summer Camps in the UK, Bournemouth University or closer to the UAE, Kings Academy, Jordan. For the more arty or “luvvies” anongst the family then you can act and create all you like at Felsted School summer camp or the Young Film Academy.

5) If your child is starting to think about University then the summer can be used very productively taking courses in subjects they might want to study as a degree. You can take course in Law, PPE,Dentistry at Kings College London or take the opportunity to experience Oxford with Oxford Summer School.

6) For some children a few weeks away from the indulgence of Dubai can be very helpful and there are great camps which have a focus on healthy living and eating. Check out Wellsprings UK.

7) What if you want your child to have an experience of British boarding school life? Look at Millfield Summer Camp or Abberley Hall  for them to have a taste of a real live Harry Potter environment.

8) If your child is thinking ahead to careers but is too young for work experience then there are some fascinating options such as the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations, or the Glion summer school program for hospitality in London.

9) Trying to find something to fit everyone in the family then a multi activity course maybe the answer, there are great opportunities at Brillantmont Summer School in Switzerland or in Uppingham Summer School leafy rural England.

Whatever courses you decide to explore you will also need to think about:

 – The balance of the courses on the multi activity or language courses how much is activity and how much is work?
 – If you are looking for a pre-university one then check out where they are being hosted – what better time than now to try out living in a real university?
 – If you are considering an academic programme check out what the entrance requirements are to make sure your child is eligible.
 – Make sure you are clear about the age groups for courses and whether they are single sex or co ed.
Best of all with the right choices, your children will have a summer to remember, will have escaped the heat for a while and will come home with tales of adventures and new friends they have made.
